I love the ease and accessibility of using one’s own voice as an effective healing tool. I have been toning for many years alone and with others. It is always transformative.
Here are some of my favourite writings on toning and a little of my own experience…I highly recommend it!
“Toning offers endless possibilities; in particular, its restorative value. It is the ability of giving release and allowing the natural flow of energy to move through one’s body. It acts as a stimulator, removing obstructions so that the body may function in its proper state. Toning is much more than just a release of tension. It acts as a means by which the total expression of harmony and balance may be created and developed.”
ELYSE BETZ COULSON Toning – The Creative power of the Voice
“It’s a simple yet powerful technique, accessible to everyone regardless of vocal ability or training. Through toning you can immediately experience the effects of sound on your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
By literally massaging body and mind from the inside out, meditative toning can help you focus and relax; release negative emotions; reduce stress; and improve stamina and concentration.
Toning synchronizes the brainwaves and helps relieve tension within a few minutes. Toning is also a wonderful technique for developing your voice-ear connection and enhancing your power of listening to everything around you.
Most of all, toning restores balance and harmony to the mind and body. It can help you awaken and deepen your sense of self, and align you to the deepest vibrations of soul and spirit. On the path of toning, you move toward the source of your own inner balance, creativity, well-being, and freedom.
Since the early 1980s, thousands of people have discovered toning, and found it useful for their own health and mental clarity. Doctors, nurses, psychologists, therapists, body workers, teachers, and business professionals have affirmed the benefits of toning in their lives and work.”
DAVID GORDON Nada Yoga – The Yoga of Sound
“Beneath…words are the vibrations of the tone upon which they travel. Tone is the underlying force operating in our lives. To understand this enhances our ability to create what we wish and to give form and substance to the ideas in our minds.”
“By releasing tensions and stimulating circulation and nerve energy in the body, Toning is a natural method of healing. It releases the pattern of perfection within each person.”
“Every pain has its companion Tone and by pulsating the tone softly for a time…the pain will be relieved or eliminated. It is an escape valve for the pain because it is breaking up the tension which we label “pain” and it brings new life energy to that place. It is an inner sonar massage.”
“It is good to chant…almost anywhere and anytime. It can be done softly, almost whispered, so long as one is hearing it inwardly. It keeps the mind occupied with the beauty of sound and permits the soul to be free in its communion with its Source.”
ELIZABETH LAUREL KEYES Toning – The Creative power of the Voice
In my quest to discover more about Nada Yoga, the yoga of sound, something I have been curious about for many years, I enrolled in a Nada Yoga Teacher Training beginning on January 1st 2016. I arrived in Rishikesh, the world capital of yoga, late in the evening after a long flight from Brisbane via Singapore and a fairly hairy, mega dusty, bumpy, noisy, chaotic (note to self: never do this again) taxi ride. When the car thankfully stopped, a smiling Indian face peered in the window and told me to get on the back of the motor bike in front of me, suitcases bags and all, and I was transported through more chaos, the bike horn tooting madly at any oncoming traffic (normal road manners in India!), over the Ram Jhlua bridge that stretches elegantly above the famous Ganges, to finally arrive at my destination, the Nada Yoga School. Phew! I was exhausted and my stomach wasn’t happy after the rather too spicy though delicious lunch I had shared with the taxi driver. More smiling faces and I began conversing through my delirium. I expressed my desire to play the beautiful tanpura and the response was to “Get the App”. The App was played and the three people present began to sing beautiful Classical Indian inspired improvisations along with the sound of the tanpura emanating from a tiny speaker. It was so soothing and comforting and I began to make sounds myself, directing the resonance to my belly where I was feeling the most discomfort. It worked! I was so grateful that the unpleasant churning in my stomach disappeared.
So dear ones, I encourage you to tone. It is such a simple and effective healing technique that is freely available any time. During my above mentioned trip to India, whenever I felt confronted by the chaos and the sheer volume of people in Delhi, such as moving through the confusing and crowded train station, I toned. It helped me tune into my centre, keep calm and made the experience enjoyable rather than stressful and nerve wracking. OM
